About Omega Iota Iota Chapter
Who Are We?…We Are The Four Cards!
The Brothers of Omega Iota Iota Chapter have exemplified the Cardinal Principles of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. over the past years by Endeavoring to Persevere! Who are we? We are the 2 time “Chapter of the Year” at the State Level. We are the 2- time “Social Action” Chapter of the year at the State and District level. We are the recipients of the “Social Action” chapter of the year award presented to us at the 73rd Grand Conclave in 2004! This award recognized Omega Iota Iota Chapter at the International level, but more importantly it recognizes the impact our chapter community service projects have in making a difference in our community. Headed by the vision of our Basileus, and the fifty thoroughly immersed brothers, Omega Iota Iota chapter continues to reach the stars through strong brotherhood and community service.
We exemplify MANHOOD by serving as mentors and role models to Montgomery’s youth. Through our Partners in Education (PIE) Program we adopted the Hayneville Road Elementary school. We conduct reading programs and tutoring to disadvantaged students. In addition to sponsoring those programs, we visit the students on all holidays and provide gifts to students who may otherwise go without. While the students enjoy the gifts, more importantly they see a group of strong men serving as positive role models and mentors! A number of the brothers in Omega Iota Iota are educators; the chapter regularly visits their schools and mentor to junior high and high school students about the benefits of staying in school and getting a good education.
We exemplify SCHOLARSHIP first by recognizing the scholastic achievements of our Brothers. We sponsor an undergraduate scholarship award that we give to a deserving brother at one of our local colleges. From a community perspective, our chapter rewards excellence in education by providing two $1,000 dollar scholarships to deserving high school seniors in the Montgomery Tri-County area. In addition to these scholarships we encourage our chapter brothers to continue their education by giving them Continuing Education Grants to help defray the cost of Post Graduate Education. We know that Scholarship is not limited to academic attainments; learning is much broader and the Brothers of Omega Iota Iota understand that our communities need education in things like kidney disease, sickle cell awareness, diabetes, and AIDs. We exemplify scholarship by providing the community with information to help them make better life decisions.
We exemplify PERSEVERANCE by continually striving to bring brothers back in the fold. We host a Reclamation Tailgate during Alabama State’s first home game. This avenue helps us to reach those brothers in the community who are not financial with a graduate chapter and impress upon them that Omega needs them! In addition, we host monthly Brotherhood luncheons at black-owned restaurants in Montgomery, and this is part of our Economic Empowerment Program because this supports our community with our dollars as well as allowing the brothers to fraternize and spread the word about our Omega Iota Iota chapter and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity!
We exemplify UPLIFT by reaching out to the community through clothing and food donations. On a regular basis, we donate articles of clothing, shoes and toys to the Family Sunshine Organization in Montgomery, AL. This organization exists to end family violence and foster hope and healing in seven Alabama counties: Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes, and Montgomery. Additionally, the chapter collects and donates old cell phones to the Sunshine Center—these phones are then programmed for emergency numbers and given to victims to call for help. We raise and donate over $4000 dollars a year to the Alabama Kidney Foundation as well as sponsor over 30 walkers who participate in the Alabama Kidney Foundation Walk-A-Thon. We’ve hosted and participated in numerous voter registration drives in our community and to date, we’ve helped register hundreds of people. These are but a few of the major activities we do to uplift our community. As we know, if one of us is in need, we’re all in need.
The Omega Iota Iota Chapter continues to serve our Fraternity diligently and faithfully in all our endeavors. With time, affection, patience and love we strive to be better brothers and better stewards of our Cardinal Principles and by doing so, create a better community in the Montgomery and Tri-county area.
Who are we? … Simply put … We are the Four Cards!
Chapter History
The formulation of this chapter was mainly the initiative of Brothers S. Earl Wilson and John F.K. Jones. They theorized the City of Montgomery would be enhanced by an additional Chapter of Omega men. The chapter was established on the principles of intense reclamation and dedicated work with a strong belief and renewed enthusiasm that another chapter could assist in serving the area through more beneficial social and civic oriented community projects and programs. Those men believed their presence, through Omega, would make Montgomery a better place to live and visit.
Deciding to apply the Litmus test to the Supreme Council of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the city and county of Montgomery, as well as Maxwell Air Force Base; these men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity embodied the fraternal spirit of Omega that brought the Fraternity’s Founding Fathers (Brothers Love, Just, Cooper and Coleman) together. The Chapter’s Charter was signed by Members of the Supreme Council and presented 23 July 1994 by Brother and 7th District Representative George Grace. Omega’s next Great Chapter, Omega Iota Iota, was born with thirty-one (31) Brothers as the Chapter’s Founders: (Brothers Charles R. Anderson, John Archield, Michael Armistead, Johnny Bannister, David M. Barnes, Tommie L. Bennett, Keith Daniels, Keith L. Davis, Timothy Davis, Jone H. Debnam, Clarence Duncan, George E. Edwards, Meryles L. Gilbert, Grady C. Hana III, Sylvester Hendrix, Vince L. Johnson, John F.K. Jones, Jeffrey L. Lattimore, Herbert McFadden, Russell McKethan, Herman J. Parker,
Keith M. Powe, Quinton T. Ross Jr., Jerome Selmar, Darryl R. Sinkfield, Louis Sneed, Keith A. Washington, Charles M. Weaver, S. Earl Wilson, Anthony K. Womack, and Rodney Ziegler.
Through the years, several men have been afforded the opportunity to strengthen the chain of Brotherhood established by the Founding Fathers and the creation of the Omega Iota Iota Chapter. The chain was linked with the following fifty-eight (58) chapter additions.
